Synopsis
Rancher Blaze Barker is paroled from prison, having served two years of a five-year sentence for robbing a stagecoach of $75,000. Upon his release, Blaze swears to return to his home in Dead Falls and prove his innocence, arguing that he was framed by businessmen Cyrus Jenkins, Jonathan Bently and Ben Slocum. The businessmen quickly leave town in fear, but first send their henchmen, led by Dan Jason, to kill Blaze before he reaches Dean Falls. The rancher is saved from their ambush by fellow stagecoach passenger, gunman Fargo Steele. Upon arriving in Dead Falls, Blaze is warmly greeted by his partner, barber Angus McAngus, his girl friend, rancher Joan Winters, and his best friend, lawyer Doug Ransom. Later, Jason tries to provoke Blaze into a fight, but the ex-convict recoils in fear. Jason then writes the businessmen that prison has broken Blaze, and the crooks return to Dead Falls, confident that Blaze will not harm them. Jason is mistaken, however, as Blaze immediately confronts Jenkins, Bently and Slocum, and warns the businessmen not to attempt to leave town. The businessmen then meet with their silent partner, Ransom, who plots to send Blaze back to prison. Knowing that Blaze and Angus need to pay the back taxes on their cattle ranch, Ransom has cattle buyer Steve Bannister purchase some of their cattle and pay Blaze with stolen stagecoach money. The tax collector takes the money to Sheriff Waddell, who in turn reports to Fargo, who is actually a United States Marshal assigned to finding the stolen money. Angus overhears their conversation and rides off to warn Blaze. After Blaze confronts Bannister, the cattleman confesses that he got the money from Ransom. Meanwhile, the cowardly Bently is killed by Ransom, who then attempts to frame Blaze for the murder. Fargo discovers Blaze and Angus with $5,000 of the stolen money, and unmoved by their pleas of innocence, insists on turning them over to the sheriff. Blaze escapes, however, and catches Ransom, Jenkins and Slocum in the lawyer's office with the remainder of the stolen money. With the real criminals captured, Fargo tells Blaze that he is going to recommend a full pardon for the rancher, and Blaze and Joan are married.
