Synopsis
American playboy millionaire Casey's plans for a Kenya safari include every conceivable luxury. Disgusted, veteran safari guide Miles Gilchrist refuses to work for Casey and sets out alone on a hunt for the killer elephant that took the life of his closest friend. Learning that Miles holds himself partly to blame for his friend's death, Casey decides to follow Miles. After reproving Alec Beaumont, a profiteering white hunter who refuses to allow the halfbreed Grant (Casey's mistress) to eat at his table, Casey trails Miles and helps him save a group of whites ambushed in a Masai village. The two men gradually develop a mutual respect, and they join forces in fighting off an attacking rhino; but later, Miles loses his nerve, and he and Casey are nearly killed by a herd of charging elephants. Aware that Miles must be the one to destroy the killer elephant, Casey refuses to fire when they once again encounter the animal. Though the elephant presents a perfect target, Miles simply stands squarely before his quarry and refrains from squeezing the trigger--the return of his self-confidence is proof enough that he has regained his status. Casey bids Miles farewell and leaves Africa. The unhappy Grant, somehow at home in the rapidly changing new Africa, remains behind in the hope of finding another wealthy would-be hunter.
