Synopsis
Johnny Ward returns to the squalor of his backwoods North Carolina home at the end of World War II and marries his sweetheart, Carol Harmon, the mother of his 5-year-old son, J.J. Johnny decides to rob his employer, a bootlegger, of $250,000 kept in a safe. To implement his plan, he enlists the aid of an Army buddy, Roger, who had demolition experience during the war, and they plan to rob the safe on the day of the town picnic, disabling the cars at the picnic to avoid pursuit. While Carol and J.J. wait in Johnny's car, the men blow up the safe; but the strongbox is thrown through the floor out of their reach. Johnny kills a Federal agent as they make their getaway, and later, while escaping from a trap, Johnny and Roger shoot down several more victims. Fearful of roadblocks, the trio leave J.J. with Carol's mother before setting out for a better life in California. Carol's patrolman brother Charlie spots them when they stop at a diner, but rather than turn in his sister he gives them 10 minutes to get away. Unaware of what has happened, Roger walks out of the men's room, fails to recognize the police officer, and kills him. Back on the run, the fugitives stop at a sawmill operated by one of Johnny's cousins and are trapped in a police ambush while trying to switch cars. Roger is killed, and Carol is mortally wounded as Johnny drives his car through a barrage of gunfire. Aware that he can never reach California, Johnny heads for home; he reaches the house and discovers that his wife has died.
