Synopsis

In a cantina in Johannesburg, South Africa, independent flier Bob Simpson convinces his partner, Mike Patton, to search for missing heiress Greta Vanderhorn. Greta's plane went down in September 1939 in an African jungle just after Britain declared war on Germany. When Bob and Mike locate the wreckage, they are confronted by an indigenous tribe. In a panic, Bob shoots one of the tribesmen and is brought before their chief, a woman whom the tribe worships as the white goddess. To satisfy the angry tribesmen, the woman, who is Greta, orders Bob's execution in eight days, but later tells Mike in secret that she hopes Bob and Mike will help her escape. As Mike falls in love with Greta, Bob plans his own escape with Greta's only friend, Wanama, who immediately confesses Bob's scheme to Greta and Mike. When Mike confronts Bob and tries to disarm him, the gun goes off, and the guard is shot. Greta, Mike and Bob flee as the tribesmen pursue them. En route, Greta twists her ankle, and they are forced to camp overnight in the jungle. In the morning, when Bob tries to leave with their only compass, Mike fights him, but is knocked out. When he revives, he and Greta trail Bob and find their plane. Bob has gone mad, however, and Mike fights him to get the gun. Bob is speared by a tribesman, whom Mike shoots, before escaping in the plane with Greta.
