Synopsis

Unaware that he has accidentally dropped some LSD-filled sugar cubes into his cup of coffee, Jonathan Fields later wakes up in a strange apartment and discovers the corpse of a young woman submerged in the bathtub. Noticing dried blood on his wrist, he flees, fearing that he was responsible for the woman's death. With the assistance of private detective Arthur Belding, Fields attempts to reconstruct the previous evening's events, but a form of amnesia prevents him from remembering. Upon partially recovering his memory, however, he returns to his job as a scientist at a "think tank," where high government and military officials are evaluated by computers. There he is greeted by Lew Haley, a co-worker who is obviously eager to take over his job, and Helen Atterbury, his girl friend. Meanwhile, Belding pursues his investigation at the apartment, even though an earlier check had revealed no corpse. Hippies Dill and Arnie abduct the detective and force him to take LSD, but he escapes and recovers in the apartment of his girl friend, Sarah. Fields then takes another dose of LSD under the supervision of Belding and recalls the events of the fateful evening. His superior, Dr. Edward Arkroyd, had been having an affair with the murdered woman and was paying blackmail to Haley. Eventually, the woman threatened to talk to the police, and Haley killed her. When Arkroyd learned of the murder, he too was slain by Haley, who then planned to incriminate Fields in both crimes. Fields confronts Haley with the facts, and they engage in a fight that ends with Haley falling to his death from a window of their office building.
