Synopsis
Joe Mason, the manager of Freddie Fisher and His Schnickelfritz Band, plays the group's demo record for frozen foods magnate P. J. Jarvis, who needs a band for his New York radio show. Believing that the Schnickelfritz Band is not "rural" enough, Jarvis orders his assistant, Don Wilson, to contact Ernest Tubb and His Texas Troubadors at the farm at which they work. Having overheard the conversation, Joe quits as Freddie's manager and goes to the Fairview Farm to sign Ernest and his band. When he arrives at the farm, however, Joe learns that Ernest has left for the city. Abigail Uppington, who runs the farm with her niece, Ruth Cartwright, and Ruth's four sisters, is furious that the hands have left before harvesting the current crop, but Joe promises that he can supply the needed workers. Joe then calls Freddie and the boys, and after explaining that they must impersonate Ernest and his band when Wilson arrives in a few days, the boys begin work as Ruth's farm hands. The men are exhausted by the hard labor, but manage to practice impersonating the Troubadors' musical style and succeed in fooling Wilson. Wilson tells them to return to New York immediately to begin rehearsals, but when Joe tells Ruth that they are quitting to pursue their big break, she angrily tells him that they cannot leave. Ruth explains that all essential workers, such as farm hands, must have Availability Certificates in order to leave a job and take another, and that she will not give the men their certificates until after the harvest. Joe and the boys refuse to work, hoping that Ruth will fire them, but Ruth and her sisters retaliate by refusing to feed them. Both sides then change their tactics, with the men working hard and the women being attentive and sweet. Soon after, Ruth and her sisters invite Joe and the boys on a picnic, and despite Ruth and Joe's feelings for each other, she rejects him upon learning that the men have been working hard only to obtain their certificates. Meanwhile, back in New York, Wilson is anxious about the repeated delays in beginning the rehearsals. After Jarvis yells at him to find a band immediately, Wilson decides to hire the Schnickelfritz band instead of the Troubadors. The real Troubadors, who have been coming to Jarvis' office every day, are frustrated in their attempts to see Jarvis and are about to give up when his secretary, Alice Darling, who has a crush on Wilson, decides to help Wilson by having the Troubadors impersonate the Schnickelfritz band. Ernest and his bewildered bandmates do as they are instructed and are hired by Jarvis, who wants them to travel to a jamboree in the country to make their radio debut. Back on the farm, Joe and the men regret their selfishness and bring in the harvest. After giving the men their certificates, Ruth tells them how vital farm work is to the war effort, but the band members decide to leave anyway. As they are driving, however, Joe and the boys discuss their desire to do more important work. Their discussion is interrupted by the jamboree broadcast, during which Freddie Fisher and His Schnickelfritz Band are introduced. Realizing that someone is impersonating them, the boys race off to the grange hall, where Ruth and her sisters are attending the show. After an argument, the identities of the two bands are established and each plays in their own style. Jarvis is most impressed by the singing of Ruth and her sisters, and hires them to be his new band. Soon after, Joe and the members of both bands are happily working on the farm while Ruth and the girls entertain soldiers with their radio program.
