Synopsis

After the Civil War, only a few soldiers are assigned to police Indian territory. Many communities are thus left without law enforcement and at the mercy of unscrupulous white men, who take advantage of Indian discontent for their own purposes. Outside one Army fort, new officer Lt. Randolph Mason questions Sgt. Gene Autry, and when Gene does not stand at attention while he answers, arrests him. Later, at the fort, Capt. Wallace informs Randy that Gene was a captain in the Confederate Army and is now working undercover for the Chief of Indian Affairs. This information does not diffuse the bad feelings between the two men, so Wallace suggests they settle their disagreement with their fists. Gene, who has just returned from a parlay with the Apache chiefs, reports that the chiefs do not want to fight with the whites, but that many young braves, believing that the whites are exhausted from the war, are following The Apache Kid, who has promised them guns. The Kid, also called Johnny Corday, was Gene's courier during the war, and Gene is convinced that The Kid, who is half-Indian, is at the bottom of the troubles. In civilian dress, Gene arrives at Apache Springs and soon encounters The Kid. Gene learns that The Kid is working with a man named Curt Raidler, an Austrian who was thrown out of Quantrill's Raiders. Raidler and The Kid plot to drive rancher Jim Colton out of Hidden Valley because they want his land. Gene and his friend, Shadrach Jones, lose The Kid's trail, but discover Indian tracks and follow them just in time to help Colton and his daughter Melody drive away their Indian attackers. Later, Gene tells The Kid that he also intends to run cattle near Hidden Valley. When Gene and Shad return to their shack, they find Randy, who has been assigned to join them. Later, when the Colton camp is empty, The Kid and his men burn it down after killing the camp cook. Gene hears the shot and arrives in time to see The Kid riding away. Later, The Kid prevents Raidler from killing Gene and then tells him that he has repaid his debt and will kill him himself if he gets in the way. This does not stop Gene, who follows The Kid and learns that the guns are in a wagon train crossing the desert. Gene signals the chiefs with smoke and instructs them to attack the wagon train. Furious, Raidler shoots The Kid and then fights with Gene. Before he dies, The Kid shoots Raidler for repeatedly calling him a savage, thus saving Gene's life. Summoned by Randy, the cavalry then arrives in Apache Springs. Later, Melody and Randy announce their plans to marry, and Randy and Gene finish their fight.
