Synopsis

In 1865 near the end of the Civil War, Rebels ambush a Union convoy, steal $1 million in gold, and hide the treasure in a cave near Phantom Hill, Texas. Two Union officers, Matt Martin and Adam Long, with three enlisted men, set out to find the gold. Rebel leader Joe Barlow accompanies them; he has agreed to lead them to the treasure in exchange for his freedom. Also accompanying the search party as far as the next stagecoach stop is Memphis, a young lady of questionable reputation who is attracted to Matt. After they all survive an Indian attack, Barlow leads the group to the gold. Attempting, however, to get the money for himself, he plies the soldiers with liquor, then kills two of them. Leaving Matt, Adam, and Krausman to fend for themselves unarmed against probable Indian attack, Barlow escapes with Memphis and the gold. Outwitting the Indians, but losing Krausman, Matt and Adam retrieve their horses and pursue Barlow and Memphis. In the nick of time, Memphis throws a gun to Matt, who kills Barlow. The gold is returned to the U. S. Government.
