Synopsis

Adam Farradene, a private investigator for a large insurance agency, is about to sail on his honeymoon cruise when he receives an urgent phone call from his old friend, Eve Blades, who pleads for his help in investigating the unexpected death of her wealthy stepfather and fiancée, Stephen Blades. Blades was insured by Adam's company, and so he promptly departs, leaving his furious bride Janet Payne to follow. At the Blades house, Adam is informed by Inspector Mathews that he suspects Eve of the crime because Eve has disappeared and her gun was found at the scene of the murder. Eve's guilt is echoed by her stepsister Cecile, who tells of a quarrel on the night of the murder between Eve and her stepbrother Jimmy, who was also in love with Eve. Because Stephen's insurance policy would be voided in the case of suicide, Adam insists that Stephen killed himself and decides to undertake his own investigation. Finally catching up to her husband, a jealous Janet insists in participating in the investigation, and Adam tells her that he believes Stephen was killed by someone close to him. In private, Cecile accuses Sarah Frome, Stephen's sister-in-law and the beneficiary of his insurance, of stealing Eve's gun to make Stephen's suicide appear like murder. When Cecile demands that Sarah sign the insurance benefits over to her, Sarah shoots her with Eve's gun and then immediately visits Adam to provide herself with an alibi. Sarah tells Adam about Cecile's blackmail attempt, and they return to Cecile's apartment, where the wounded Cecile collapses. When Jimmy confesses to the murder to protect Eve, Eve calls Sarah for help and Sarah sends her into a police trap at Cecile's apartment. Immediately after, Adam visits Sarah, hoping to find Eve. Meanwhile, Janet, who has decided to solve the case herself, visits Cecile and hears her accuse Sarah in her sleep. At that moment, Sarah, who has slipped away from Adam, appears at Cecile's bedside and is about to eliminate Janet when Adam comes to her rescue. With the case solved, both Adam and Janet take the credit and begin life as a happily married couple.
