Synopsis
After gambler "Full House" Johnny Corinti refuses to pay the $10,000 he owes to the crooked gambling house run by Clarkey, he is murdered and thus becomes the third victim of what police suspect is a gambling war. When the killer escapes with the aid of bumbling policeman Hugo Meyer, Harry Chase, editor of the Express , publishes the embarrassing story as a way to get back at Police Commissioner Frank Desmond, who openly scorns the press. Bob Grayson, a reporter for Chase, offers to make a deal for favorable coverage with Desmond, but is flatly rejected; however, he finds a willing partner in Hugo, who agrees to tip him off during police investigations. In exchange for information, Bob facilitates Hugo's promotion by a publicity campaign that credits him with a number of heroic deeds. Hugo, however, is later ordered by Desmond to stop press leaks, which once again creates a rift between reporters and policemen. Bob and his fellow reporters, including Craig, Hamilton and the lazy Johnson, run up an expensive tab at Clarkey's, which they are almost forced to pay when Hugo belatedly arrives to raid the gambling house. During the raid, Clarkey is murdered, and gangster Phil Zarias quickly hands the murder weapon to socialite Myrna Van Buren. After she is photographed holding the gun, Bob quickly develops a ruse to get her away from the scene of the crime and from the other reporters in order to get an exclusive. Telephoning Chase from his apartment, Bob announces that he has the murderess, only to learn that Myrna is the daughter of the wealthy owner of the Express . Believing Myrna to be innocent, Bob continues to hide her while the other reporters conduct an unsuccessful search; however, Johnson, jealous of Bob's scoop on the case, reports to the Dispatch , a rival newspaper, that Bob and the Express are obstructing justice. Myrna and Bob hide out in a hotel room overnight, and the next morning, when Bob goes in search of Zarias, a cab driver recognizes him and telephones his whereabouts to Hugo. Zarias, who is after Myrna because of her knowledge of the murder, convinces Hugo to arrest Bob, but Bob skillfully manipulates Hugo into believing that the French girl friend of Zarias is the killer, and the couple is subsequently arrested. Bob later admits to Desmond that he planted the murder weapon on Zarias in order to protect Myrna; however, Myrna is finally able to tell her side of the story and implicates Zarias as the murderer. Despite the difference between their respective social classes, Bob and Myrna have fallen love, and she promises to have her father promote him to city editor.
