Synopsis

Greg Rafferty, an aging English racing driver whose nerves and reputation are beginning to suffer from a series of bad crashes, agrees to race for Bartell, a wealthy American who wants to promote his brand of tires. The decision angers Greg's younger brother, Taz, who has promised their mother that he will not race until Greg has retired from the sport. At first Bartell's tires prove to be defective, and Greg is forced to use another brand to win the annual race at Sebring, Florida. Under the supervision of Greg's mechanic and navigator, Richie Launder, the tires are perfected. Greg, meanwhile, has fallen in love with Bartell's daughter, Diane, who also wants him to give up racing. On the eve of the big event at Italy's Mille Miglia, Greg and Richie make a test run in the new car Richie has designed. As they roar around a bend on the 1,000-mile stretch of treacherous road, they hit a patch of oil; and Richie is killed in the subsequent crash. Without a navigator, Greg feels that he must withdraw from the race. Taz, however, offers to substitute; and Greg, feeling duty-bound to win with Richie's car, agrees to drive. He wins the race; and as he embraces Diane, he decides to retire and give Taz his chance at racing.
