Synopsis

Wall Street financier John Power, whose influence extends far into the financial and political worlds, becomes involved in Joan Wray's efforts to clear her brother, Senator Dick Wray, of rumored connections with questionable transactions among Frank Forrest (Joan's fiancé), a western oil company official, and two stockbrokers. Joan poses as an assistant to the U. S. Attorney General so as to gain entrance to the Power household and falls in love with Power's son, Bruce, after persuading him to help her. Having discovered Joan's identity and her relationship to Frank Forrest, John Power uses this knowledge to try to antagonize Bruce, but this objective is accomplished instead by Forrest. In a frenzy Joan shoots Forrest, and Bruce takes the blame; in the confusion and explanations that follow it is revealed that Gerald Graves, Power's secretary, actually killed Forrest and that Joan is the daughter of John Power's former sweetheart. Falling ill, Power has feverish dreams, through which pass most of the people he manipulated throughout his life, and upon recovering he has Senator Davis drop impeachment proceedings against Senator Wray and is reconciled with Joan and Bruce, who find happiness in each other's love.
