Synopsis

In her 9th month of pregnancy, Doris Bolton finally marries Walter Owen, a young anti-establishment photographer, and they return to their East Village loft. She calls her father, an advertising executive in Denver, who is so shocked by the news that he takes the next plane to New York. Outwardly a cool and sophisticated man, Jim Bolton is secretly disturbed at having sold out to institutions in which he does not believe. Although Doris assures Walter that her father is liberal, they agree not to tell him of their plan to deliver the baby at home, unaided. Jim is dismayed when he first sees their apartment and is appalled by his daughter's advanced pregnancy. He argues with Walter about their dependence on the system they decry, and Walter blurts out their plan for the natural birth. The next morning Jim seeks aid from his friend Stan, an obstetrician, and Winn, a young lawyer who once dated Doris. They feel that there is not much that can be done in the face of the parents' decision, and Jim makes a final appeal to Doris and Walter, pointing out that parents must sacrifice their own convictions for the benefit of their children. Doris replies that she doesn't want her child to feel guilty, as she always did, because Jim had sacrificed his principles for her sake. Doris goes into labor, but the delivery is not as smooth as the parents had expected. Luckily, Stan is around to help out, and as Walter and Jim fold sterilized sheets in the next room, they find themselves united by this experience. They hear a small cry from the next room and Stan announces the arrival of a boy. "Just what we need," smiles Jim, "another troublemaker!"
