Synopsis

Early one morning David leaves his Roman tenement to look for a job so that he can marry Ivana, a young woman who has borne him a son. David visits a lawyer, Moglie, who supposedly will find him work. While in the lawyer's building, David looks into an apartment in which an unattended corpse lies in state. After taking note of an expensive ring on the dead man's hand, David enters Moglie's office. Moglie impatiently brushes him off, however, and he is once again without hope of a job. While roaming the streets, David encounters a prostitute, Marina, with whom he once had an affair. After a brief interlude of lovemaking, David accompanies Marina to her next client, who turns out to be Moglie. The two blackmail the lawyer into getting David a job as a truckdriver for the Romani oil company. Romani's mistress, Freya, is immediately attracted by David's simplicity and virility; she seduces him, but their passion is interrupted by the roar of David's abandoned truck as it crashes down a hill and bursts into flames. Once more unemployed and completely disillusioned, David heads back for Rome. He suddenly remembers the ring on the dead man's hand, goes to the empty apartment to steal it, and returns to Ivana with enough money to buy a small stall in the local market, baptize their child, and get married.
