Synopsis

To please his wife Pauline, Buford Pusser retires from wrestling and moves back to Tennessee to go into the logging business with his father. After his arrival, Buford g s to the Lucky Spot gambling club with a friend and is seriously wounded with a knife after he catches the management cheating at craps. When he reports this to the sheriff, his complaint is ignored, and Buford soon realizes how corrupt McNairy County has become. Determined to correct the situation, Buford runs for sheriff himself, and wins. However, he meets with opposition from some of the citizens and is frequently harassed. Eventually, while he is with Pauline, he is shot and injured and she is killed. As soon as he recovers sufficiently, Buford drives his sheriff cruiser through the front doors of Lucky Spot killing their attackers. Then, as he and his deputies are leaving, the townspeople set the furniture from the club on fire in the parking lot as Buford weeps.
