Synopsis

Henry Simmons, senior partner of a paint firm, is determined to keep his daughter Ethel from the company of Roger Shields, a disreputable "lounge lizard," with whom she travelled home from Chicago. Henry puts his shy, junior partner, Chester Binney, to the task of attracting Ethel's attention, but she is only interested in more worldly men. Henry gets a photograph of famous screen star Letty Lythe and autographs it from her to Chester, implying he has had a love affair with her. Mrs. Simmons spreads the news of Chester's affair, and when they attend a screening of Letty's film, the audience is packed. Letty makes a personal appearance at the film with her fiancé, Donald Swift, who hears about her supposed affair with Chester and is determined to beat him up. Letty attends Mrs. Simmons's garden party to seek revenge on Chester for his farce, and give her fiancé his comeuppance. When Letty startles Chester with an embrace, she incurs Ethel's jealousy and Roger's rage. After a week, Chester and the Simmons attend the theatre, and Roger pushes Donald into a fight with Chester, who insists on fighting in the dark as in one of Letty's films. Roger accidentally ends up fighting with Donald and is knocked out, after which Chester, who had been hanging by the chandelier, proclaims himself conqueror and Ethel, finally in love with him, hurries to his side.
