Synopsis

Balestrieri, an aged married artist, dies while making love to Cecilia, a young model, whereupon his neighbor Dino takes the woman as his own. A failed painter dominated by his wealthy American mother, Dino attempts to overcome his ennui through ardent lovemaking with Cecilia. Dino becomes madly jealous, however, upon discovering that he shares her favors with the actor Luciani. Vainly attempting to prevent her proposed idyll in Capri with his rival, Dino proposes marriage. This failing, he invites Cecilia to his mother's palatial Roman estate, where he tries unsuccessfully to dazzle her with his wealth. As he covers Cecilia, lying naked on a bed, with banknotes, they are interrupted by his jaded mother. Realizing that he cannot possess Cecilia, the despondent Dino smashes his sportscar, a maternal birthday present, into a wall. While recuperating in a hospital, he realizes the futility of his obsession. Though Cecilia, having returned from her holiday, is ready to resume their liaison, Dino renounces his passion.
