Curtis Hanson's onscreen credit reads "Written and directed by." R. R. Thomas' onscreen credit reads "Production manager and assistant director." Although the onscreen credits include a 1971 copyright statement for Curtis Lee Hanson and Tamarac Productions, Inc., the film was not registered for copyright. A pre-credit sequence shows a Peeping Tom watching a woman (either "Eddie Collins'" mother or a prostitute paid to impersonate her) strip and lie down in bed. Another naked woman then enters a bathtub and hears an intruder. The opening credits include only the name of the production company and title of the film.
According to the February 1976 Los Angeles Times review, Sweet Kill had been released in 1972, but poor reception caused the producers to pull the film. It was re-released in 1976 under the name The Arousers, the title of the print viewed. The running time of the re-release version was listed variously as 75 or 80 minutes.
The picture marked the debut of writer-director Curtis Hanson, who went on to direct L.A. Confidential in 1997. Despite its low budget and lurid topic, reviewers lauded Hanson's script for Sweet Kill, noting some parallels to Alfred Hitchcock's classic 1960 horror film Psycho, including a shower stabbing scene.
