Synopsis
The sharecroppers on southerner Trent Talcott's land are tired of being exploited. When Cal Sanders, a young farmer engaged to Betsy Craig, challenges the weight of his cotton reported on the Talcott scales, a new man, David Graydon, suggests that they test the scales with some paint cans he has in his car. By the time he brings them to the scale, Sarah Talcott, Trent's sister, has shifted the weights. Cal's load of cotton tests out the same and he decides that Graydon is allied with Talcott. While Graydon visits Betsy and her grandfather, "Pap" Craig, who talk about the difficulty of their life, the other farmers, under Cal's leadership, steal back their cotton and set the warehouse on fire to cover the theft. Meanwhile, Graydon, who is secretly a newspaper reporter, finds the stolen cotton. He tells Cal that the farmers should look for a second set of books that will prove that they are being cheated. One of Talcott's men has followed Graydon to the stolen cotton, and in order to discredit him, Talcott tells the farmers that Graydon revealed their theft. When Graydon visits Betsy with the second set of books, she tries to warn him, but Sarah knocks her out and pretends that Graydon did it. Furious, the farmers are ready to lynch Graydon, but Betsy arrives in time to save him. He testifies against Talcott, and the sharecroppers take over the farm and run it fairly. Cal and Betsy are finally able to marry, and Graydon moves on to his next story.
