Synopsis
One day in the pit of Hell, Satan becomes afflicted with a painful sty. The cause, his ministers advise him, is Britt-Marie, the virginal daughter of a country pastor, a young girl who is stubbornly determined to remain pure until her wedding day. As a remedy, Satan removes Don Juan from his personal hell (seduction without fulfillment) and sends him back to Earth with orders to seduce the young woman. Accompanying Don Juan on his journey are an old watchdog devil and Don Juan's lusty servant, Pablo, who immediately defies his instructions by attempting to seduce the childish pastor's frustrated wife. For Don Juan it is a more complicated matter; the 20th century Britt-Marie is almost totally indifferent to his old-fashioned charm, and his outpourings of love merely serve to amuse her. One night, frustrated and close to desperation, Don Juan sneaks into Britt-Marie's bedroom only to be thoroughly startled by her sudden willingness to submit to him--but out of pity and compassion for his loneliness, not out of love or passion. Humiliated, Don Juan declines her offer and once more returns to Hell. Only then does he fully grasp the extent of his future torment; for the first time in eternity, Don Juan is completely and hopelessly in love. Meanwhile, Pablo's success in seducing the pastor's wife has opened the eyes of the married couple to what has been lacking in their relationship. Satan forces Don Juan to listen to Britt-Marie in bed on her wedding night, and the Devil's eye finally heals, when she tells her husband that she has never been kissed by another man.
