Synopsis

Newly arrived in San Francisco to seek a career in advertising, young Englishwoman Cathy Palmer meets and falls in love with Kenneth Daly, an out-of-work photographer. After some months, Cathy learns she is pregnant. Although Kenneth is delighted by the news and wants to get married at once, Cathy by now realizes that Kenneth is violent and emotionally unstable, and she takes the advice of her friend, Meg Stone, by having an abortion. Upon learning what she has done, Kenneth violently accuses her of murdering his child, and then disappears. In time, Cathy marries Jack Byrnes, a successful lawyer with political aspirations. After becoming pregnant again, Cathy begins to suspect that Kenneth is following her, and the ultimate confirmation of her suspicions sends her into premature labor. In the hospital waiting room, Kenneth strikes up a conversation with Jack and wins his sympathy by telling him that his own baby is dead; and he subsequently arrives at the Byrnes home to photograph the new baby. Frightened, Cathy conceals the truth from Jack and goes to visit Kenneth in the hope of reasoning with him, unaware that he has already murdered Dr. Parkington, who had performed the abortion. During their confrontation, Kenneth demands that Cathy kill Jack's baby to atone for murdering his. Terrified, Cathy rushes to Jack and confesses everything, but it is too late. When they return home, they find the baby and the cat's carrying case missing. Cathy then receives a telephone call from Kenneth instructing her to bring the baby's formula to his hotel room. While FBI agents are monitoring the call, Cathy arrives at the hotel and is about to feed her baby when she realizes that Kenneth has poisoned the formula. Before she can escape with her baby, Kenneth knocks her unconscious, places the baby in the carrying case, and flees. Once the FBI and Jack have revived Cathy, they trace Kenneth to the top of the Mark Hopkins Hotel. Overcoming her fear of heights, Cathy climbs up after Kenneth, and after promising to hurl her baby to its death and divorce Jack, she makes a desperate attempt to shove Kenneth aside and grab the carrying case. During the struggle, Cathy saves her child, but Kenneth loses his footing and plummets to his death.
