Synopsis

Jesse Crawford, a young Arkansas folk singer, heads for the college town of Waymount in hopes of getting an education. En route, he rescues the dean's pretty daughter, Judy Grant, from an automobile accident and is rewarded with an opportunity to take entrance exams, which he passes. Jesse's singing ability is soon discovered and he becomes an innocent instrument for the campus politicking of the school radical, an egotistical senior, Rego, who has started a "free speech" movement directed against Dean Grant. Rego is planning a big rally in the college auditorium and decides to use Jesse to draw a crowd. Although Jesse's singing is a huge success, he realizes too late that in allowing himself to be victimized he has hurt both Judy and her father. Angry and ashamed, he hits Rego and walks out of the rally. As he packs his bags to leave, Dean Grant makes a surprise appearance at the rally and completely wins over the student body. And Jesse is persuaded to remain on campus to continue both his studies and his romance with Judy.
