Synopsis
One night, while sitting on their favorite park bench, Colonel Henry Randolph Ransome, Andy Cook and Matt O'Donnell see young, destitute Rose Wentworth solicit an undercover detective. Sure that Rose is an innocent, the colonel, who is the misunderstood Southern patriarch of a wealthy family, interrupts the detective's arrest, pretends to be Rose's grandfather and secures her release. Instead of expressing her gratitude, however, Rose rails against Ransome for interfering in her attempt to find lodging for the night. Touched by Rose's need, Ransome, who has no money in spite of his family's wealth, takes her to a rooming house and coerces the landlady into renting her an apartment. After Rose tells him about her cruel foster parents and the boyfriend she was forced to abandon, Ransome, Andy and Matt vow to help Rose "stay honest" and reunite her with her sweetheart, Charlie Hooper. Unable to secure a loan from his rigid, stingy son Herbert, Ransome asks his friend, Horace G. Stevens, the president of his bank, to give him a thousand-dollar loan. With the money, Ransome rents an apartment for Andy, Matt and himself in Rose's building, as well as one for Charlie, for whom he also finds a job as an armored truck driver. Unknown to Ransome, however, Rose has fallen in love with his grandson Raymond and no longer loves Charlie. After Herbert, who disapproves of his father's unconventional ways, convinces Rose that, for the good of the colonel, she should leave town, Charlie, who had accepted a $10,000 bribe to "look the other way" during a holdup of his truck, is arrested. Convinced of Charlie's innocence, the colonel, Matt and Andy play poker for the honor of confessing to the crime, and Andy wins. As Andy prepares for prison, Charlie proposes to Rose, but before he and Rose leave town, Maizie, a prostitute who had befriended Rose, produces evidence that Charlie had paid for her "services" with the stolen money. Exposed, Charlie tries to escape but is thwarted by Raymond, who has declared his love for Rose. The happy couple then joins the colonel, Andy and Matt for a rendezvous in the park.
