Synopsis
While traveling West during the California Gold Rush of 1849, John Knox, his wife Martha, and their two sons, Asa and Clinton, are ambushed by outlaws. John is killed by the outlaws and Asa is kidnapped, while Martha and Clint escape and settle in St. Joseph, Missouri. In 1860, the now grown Clint, who works for the Pony Express, saves the lives of his mother, his fiancée, Mary Chrisman, and other occupants of a stagecoach when it is ambushed by outlaw Ace Carter in Wyoming. Pursued by Clint, Ace feigns a gunshot wound and fires upon Clint. Clint's life is saved, however, when his pocket Bible stops the bullet, and he succeeds in capturing Ace. When Ace recites an illegible portion of an inscription in the book, Clint concludes that Ace is his long-lost brother. Clint brings his prisoner home to South Pass Station and confides in Mary his suspicion as to Ace's identity. Martha soon is convinced that Ace is her son and refuses to testify against him during his outdoor trial. Clint pleads for Ace's life before the court and an unruly crowd that is eager for a lynching. Clint states that Ace, having been reared in a milieu of crime, never had the chance to learn right from wrong. His release assured, Ace rejoins his family while Clint rides off to deliver the mail.
