Synopsis

Conservative freshman Wayne Atterbury, Jr. arrives at Middleton College, which his father owns, and quickly tells beautiful reporter Joyce Gilmore he agrees with his father's theory that college should be all work and no play. Wayne immediately is ostracized for his views by the students, who bemoan the fact that the school hasn't won an athletic victory in five years. Hank Luisetti, a talented basketball player, befriends Wayne. Wayne tries to win his peers' affection by throwing an elegant dinner party, but no one shows up because of the annual wiener roast, one of the few "fun" activities Atterbury, Sr. allows, is on the same night. By the end of the school year, Hank considers transferring to a school where his athletic abilities will be better served. Wayne, however, offers Hank his father's estate to set up a secret training "camp" for the basketball team. Eventually, Hank convinces Wayne to shoot a few baskets, and Wayne proves so agile in the sport, he is recruited. By autumn, Wayne has transformed himself into a handsome, athletic and gregarious man. The winning team of "Atterbury and Luisetti" brings Middleton a string of victories. The night before the big game with Middleton's unbeaten rival, State University, the students hold a bonfire and Joyce sits with Wayne. When Atterbury, Sr. returns from Europe, however, he calls off the game. After the students storm the president's office, Dean Wilton assures Atterbury that the team will lose, and Atterbury agrees to let them play. Wilton then makes Hank take a math test, which he flunks, and Hank is ousted from the roster. The next day, Joyce gives Atterbury a ticket to the game, which is located on the opposing team's side. Eventually, Atterbury begins rooting for Middleton and wants Hank reinstated so they will win. During the final quarter, Atterbury gives Hank an oral math test and puts him in the game. Hank scores twenty-four points in the last six minutes of the game and Middleton wins. Wayne and Joyce kiss, and the players lift both Atterburys up on their shoulders.
