Synopsis
Bored with the dull routine of his office job and yearning to be an artist, Anthony Hancock leaves London and moves to Paris. He becomes friendly with a young painter from England, Paul, and the two share a garret studio on the Left Bank. Though Anthony's colossal sculptures and infantile paintings are totally lacking in merit, a bogus intellectual set adopts him and proclaims him a genius. Paul, who cannot comprehend his friend's "theories," becomes disheartened and returns to London, leaving his paintings behind. Paul's paintings are seen by Sir Charles Brouard, an art connoisseur who mistakes them for Anthony's and promotes a highly successful exhibit. As his fame increases, Anthony is commissioned by a Greek shipping magnate, Aristotle Carreras, to immortalize his wife in stone. The finished product, however, is a disaster, and Anthony flees to London. He discovers that Paul has adopted his "infantile" technique and has done numerous paintings. Brouard arranges a showing, and Anthony is once more hailed a genius. Realizing how completely he has hoodwinked the art world, Anthony confesses at the exhibition that the paintings are Paul's. He then returns to his former flat to continue painting and sculpting, confident that someday his talent will be recognized.
