Synopsis
Tormented by his duties as prison executioner, Ernie Mathews asks convict trustee Johnny Martin to drop him off at a bar on Johnny's route to the airport where he is driving prison doctor Robert Lee. At the bar, Manning, a belligerent newspaper reporter, accosts Ernie and a fight ensues. Meanwhile, on the way back from the airport, prison nurse Joan Wright, who had come to see Bob off on his month-long vacation, instructs Johnny to stop and pick up Ernie. Upon entering the bar, Johnny is drawn into the fight and punches Manning, pulling Ernie into the car. In revenge, Manning writes a story indicting Johnny and bringing discredit upon the governor. To hush up the scandal, the governor insists upon delaying Johnny's parole, and as Joan tries to prepare Johnny for his rejection, the two fall in love. Although the denial of his parole turns Johnny, who has suffered a series of tough breaks in his life, into an embittered man, his love for Joan sustains him. However, the final blow is dealt when Johnny's crazed cellmate, Big Billy, murders a sadistic guard and is killed during an escape attempt. Shot while trying to help his friend, Johnny is brought to trial on murder charges and convicted on the false testimony of Gus Barth, an inmate who hates him. On the night of Johnny's execution, Ernie, warden Jim Henderson and chaplain Ira Hanes stage a false execution to trap Barth, and the convict, believing that Johnny is dead, confesses to Johnny's innocence, thus awarding the unlucky trustee his freedom.
