Synopsis
In Los Angeles, Frankie Mantell and his gang pull off an $80,000 payroll robbery but are spotted by police and chased. and Frankie is wounded in the shoulder during a shootout in which the gang's driver, Nip Powers, is killed. The other gang members, Louie Volkes, Matty Farmer and Biggie Kritz, hide out at the apartment of Louie's girl friend Eve. The Acme Insurance Co., which insured the robbed company, assigns investigator Dan Sullivan to follow a lead it has received about Nip's sister Bonnie, who lives in Alaza, a mountain resort near Los Angeles. Dan goes there and, aided by Dr. Michael Kelly, locates the lodge Bonnie is operating with the assistance of a mute young man, Joey. Posing as a visitor, Dan requests a room, but Bonnie tells him he will only be able to stay for a day or two, as she is selling the place and the new buyers will soon be arriving. Dan tries to get to know Bonnie but she appears preoccupied. Meanwhile, back in Los Angeles, Eve insists that Frankie be seen by a doctor, but his gang decides to take him to his wife Bonnie's place. The next evening, Dan invites Bonnie to join him on a walk and as they stroll, they are followed by Joey. Upon returning to the lodge, they discover that Frankie and the others have arrived and Bonnie learns of Nip's death. The gang has found a gun in Dan's room and suspects that he is a policeman, but Bonnie, who saw Dr. Kelly's business card, which Dan had thrown away, tells Frankie that he is a doctor. Bonnie then tells Dan that one of the "buyers" who have arrived is hurt and asks Dan to examine him. Dan discovers that Frankie's wound is infected, but tells them that he has no equipment with him and advises that they consult a doctor in town. Frankie instead sends Louie to steal the doctor's instruments and supplies. Bonnie asks Frankie to let Dan go, as he has treated her like a gentleman, but Frankie refuses. While they wait for Louie to return, Bonnie apologizes to Dan and reveals to him the gang's involvement in the robbery. Dan tries to take a gun away from Matty and Biggie, but they overpower him as Louie returns. Frankie then instructs Biggie that, if he dies as a result of Dan's "operation," Biggie should kill Dan. After Dan removes the bullet, Bonnie reveals that Frankie is her husband, but she did not know he was a crook when she married him and no longer loves him. By the next morning, Frankie's fever from the infection has worsened and although Dan can do nothing about it, he realizes he must keep Frankie alive to guarantee his own life. The local sheriff comes to the lodge to ask about new guests who may have registered and tells Bonnie that a stranger matching Dan's description had been asking about her earlier. The gang is getting nervous about remaining at the lodge and Louie wants to leave, but Frankie, who has risen from his sick bed, shoots and kills him, then collapses. Later, although he is very ill, Frankie decides that they will leave at midnight and take "Doc" with them. Meanwhile, after Joey removes a gun from Louie's body, Dan tells him that Frankie will hurt Bonnie and tries to get him to pass information to the sheriff about the men, but is interrupted by Matty. Later, Joey enters Frankie's room by a window and suffocates him to death. Now suspicious, Bonnie questions Dan about his identity, and he manages to provide a satisfactory explanation. After Bonnie and Dan discover that Frankie is dead, Dan asks her to find him a gun. While claiming that Frankie is merely asleep, they find the money from the robbery in his bed and escape. Joey hears Matty and Biggie shooting at them and tries to help them, but is killed. Bonnie and Dan manage to get Joey's gun, however, and Dan shoots Matty in the shoulder, then overpowers Biggie. After Dan tells Bonnie that he is really an investigator for the insurance company, they hand Matty and Biggie over to the sheriff. Later, an assistant district attorney informs Bonnie that, because of her help to Dan, his office will charge her only with harboring a criminal, and will recommend leniency. As Bonnie faces her prison sentence, Dan assures her that he will be waiting for her when she is released.
