Synopsis
Nello Poletti has attained the ultimate of life's pleasures: a thriving antique business, fast cars, expensive clothes, and freedom from restrictions and obligations. One day, however, his former mistress Adalgisa is found murdered, and the police learn that she had established him in business and threatened to ruin him when he discarded her for the younger Antonella. Moreover, evidence given by his neighbors and friends, particularly Osvaldo Perfetti, appears to implicate him, and even the press brands him a murderer. Only Antonella maintains her belief in him. In prison Nello has time to reflect on the petty schemes and dishonesties that he has perpetrated in order to have a comfortable life. Disgusted with himself, he decides falsely to confess to the crime, but the police have already discovered that Osvaldo, rejected by Adalgisa, killed her in a fit of rage. Nello's misgivings about his behavior disappear, and he resumes his former life of pleasure, calling himself "l'assassino."
