Synopsis

Two aviators, Bill Ramsey, an American, and Otto Schumann, a German, stage mock air duels at a carnival, reenacting the battles of World War I. The two men are romantic rivals as well, as both are in love with Eve, one of the women in the carnival. Eve loves Otto and wants to marry him, but he keeps postponing the marriage because he does not think they have enough money. The last performance of the year takes place in Bill's home town and his mother and brother Eddie come to watch. Eddie, who also intends to become a pilot, is immediately attracted to Eve, and when Otto introduces her as his cousin, Eddie invites the two of them home for dinner. Bill learns from his father that the local mining company has an opening for a pilot and suggests that Otto take the job and marry Eve. Otto does not want the job and tries instead to interest Eddie, who has since received his pilot's license, to apply for the position. Eddie refuses, however, having promised his mailman father that he will join the air mail service. Otto has developed a scheme to rob the mining company that depends on Eddie's participation, so he forces Eve to make love to Eddie and convince him to take the job with the mining company. When Bill learns of Otto's plans, he forces Eve to tell Eddie about her relationship with Otto. She does as he asks, but after a broken-hearted Eddie leaves the room, Eve tells Bill that she has fallen in love with his brother. The morning that Eddie is to carry the company's payroll, Otto tries to make him take part in a robbery by telling Eddie that his brother Bill is also involved. Nonetheless, Eddie refuses to cooperate with Otto, and Otto plans to shoot Eddie down and rob the payroll himself. Learning of Otto's plans, Eve telephones Bill, who takes off after them in his own plane. After Otto forces Eddie's plane to land, Bill and Otto battle each other and Otto is shot down. Bill lands his plane, rescuing Eddie and the payroll after telling Eddie that Eve loves him. When the payroll is safely delivered, Bill, who was severely wounded in the battle, dies. Eve is waiting for Eddie and they are reunited.
