Synopsis

On Saturday, the women working in the candy factory talk about the dates they've planned for that afternoon. Only Susan refrains from the dialogue, claiming that she has no interest in men. At the same time, the men in a nearby automobile factory talk about women and tease Dudley Stone who only seems interested in his invention for a new tail light. At the end of the day, both Susan and Dudley go home alone with Susan returning to her goldfish and Dudley to his invention. Tired of being alone, Susan decides to change her life and takes the bus to Coney Island. At the same time, Dudley hears a radio commercial for the amusement park and sets off on his own. Susan and Dudley eye each other on the bus, but before they can speak, they are interrupted by Gilbert, an inebriated man who is looking for Dudley, but does not recognize him. Once at the park, Dudley succeeds in talking to Susan and they spend the day together enjoying the games and amusements at Coney Island. They dance to a song that becomes their song and as the day progresses, they realize that they were meant for each other. While riding the shoot-the-chutes, however, their boat crashes and they are separated. They wander all over looking for each other, but finally, they head home alone again. Neither knows the other's last name and they each assume they have lost the only person that will ever love them. Gilbert, finally sober, tracks Dudley down with an offer to buy his invention, but the distraught Dudley says the only thing that matters to him is Susan. When their song comes on the radio, he turns up the volume. Susan hears it from a neighboring apartment, and feeling tortured, demands that her noisy neighbor turn the radio off. She does not know that the room belongs to Dudley. Frustrated by his refusal to lower the radio's volume, she chops down his door with an ax, only to fall into Dudley's arms when she breaks through. Dudley and Susan are reunited and they will get rich from his invention.
