Synopsis

Delighted at having secured a title for her daughter Helen by arranging a marriage with Count Bernard d'Montaigne, Mrs. Badgley implores John Armstrong, a minister, to announce the wedding from his pulpit. Instead, however, John asks Belle, a prostitute, to come to the service, and during his sermon he points her out and says that she is no worse than Helen, who is marrying for social status rather than love. After the sermon, an angry Mr. Badgley calls off the royal wedding, prompting the count to assault the minister. Then, when Helen hears that John is injured, she rushes to him, and they realize instantly that they are in love.
