Synopsis

Unhappily wed to Mary Miranda Lamb, Leander Lamb, a meek entomologist, desires the widow next door and enjoys watching her take daily laps at the local swimming hole. Caught in this voyeuristic activity, Leander is chased and chastised by his plump wife, but the widow takes advantage of his affections and invites him to her studio to demonstrate a new provocative dance step. Once again, Mary interrupts the show, and Leander, in his night clothes, feigns sleepwalking to save himself, a convincing act that is undone later when Mary finds a note from the widow on the bedroom dresser. To counter Mary's accusations, Leander invites Blackwell, a former schoolmate, to visit and then encourages him to tell a particularly compromising story about Mary's single days. As punishment, Mary is sent to the stocks by her husband, who concludes finally that any wife is better than no wife and returns home, no longer Mary's lamb.
