Synopsis
Southerner Claire Burton marries plantation owner Paul Stanford but dreams of living in New York. She falls in love with Paul's New York lawyer, Douglas Hobson, and to obtain a divorce, devises a story of an affair with him. When she arrives in New York she finds that Douglas, who is running for district attorney, has married Eva Strong. Claire insists that he divorce Eva or else she will claim that they are having an affair, thereby ending his political aspirations. Eva buys Claire's silence, but then Paul arrives, eager to denounce Douglas as the man who ruined his marriage. To clear himself, Douglas forces Claire to deny that they had had an affair and to beg her husband's forgiveness, which he grants.
