Synopsis

The office of Frank Restlin, a Brighton real estate agent, is ransacked, and Inspector Fellows and Sergeant Wilks determine from the realtor's assistant, Ray Tenby, that the leases for several properties were stolen. The policemen investigate a deserted seaside house and find the disfigured corpse of a woman. They question a prying caretaker, a hardware store owner, and Andy Roach, a grocery store watchman, whose information leads them to believe the victim might have been spinster Jean Sherman. Traveling salesman Clyde Burchard is temporarily held as a suspect but released after Miss Sherman is found to be alive in Greenwich. Miss Sherman then helps Fellows determine the real identity of the dead woman and the past of the killer. The police cleverly trap their main witness, Ray Tenby, into confessing to the crime.
