Synopsis
Following the Catholic wedding of Joe and Mady in Dublin, the bride's mother, who is bearing her eighth child, has a miscarriage and dies. Blaming her father's sexual appetite for the death of her mother, and plagued by a childhood fear of intercourse, Mady refuses to let Joe touch her on their wedding night. With patience and compassion, Joe agrees to return alone to London, where he works as a commercial artist, while Mady remains in Dublin to help her father and younger brothers and sisters. When Mady eventually joins Joe, her problems have intensified, and she invents excuses for delaying the consummation of their marriage. Motivated both by concern and frustration, Joe tries to force himself on Mady, but he succeeds only in driving her to the brink of hysteria. When Joe seeks comfort with Gloria, a former girl friend, Mady returns to Dublin. Her doctor advises the use of contraceptives to quell her fear of pregnancy, but the local priest reminds her of the church law prohibiting birth control. Unable to persuade the priest that her marriage should be annulled, Mady collapses and is hospitalized. After she attempts suicide, Joe rushes to her bedside, and Mady realizes that perhaps she can overcome her fears.
