Synopsis
Gösta, a disenchanted seaman, is hired as a dockworker in Göteborg. At a dancehall he meets Berit, a young factory worker whom he rescued on the waterfront when she tried to commit suicide; they soon become lovers. Intent on being honest with Gösta, Berit tells him of her poor relationship with her mother, her life in reform school, and her unsuccessful relationships with men. Gösta is disturbed by Berit's past and decides to leave her. Meanwhile, Gertrud, a friend of Berit, asks her for a loan to get an abortion. Berit lends her the money and accompanies her to the abortionist, but Gertrud dies during the operation. Under pressure from her probation officer, Berit gives the police the name of the doctor. Gösta, aware of his loneliness, decides to return to Berit, and the couple prepare to flee to Stockholm, but at the last moment, they decide to remain in Göteborg and face their difficulties together.
