Synopsis

Denise, an attractive widow, falls in love with Eugène, a man several years her junior, and supports him with her inheritance. When the money becomes scarce, Eugène prepares to leave, but Denise's 19-year-old daughter Monique returns home from a sanitarium, and Eugène tries to seduce her. He is rejected by the young woman, who decides not to reveal the incident to her mother. Meanwhile, Eugène joins Fanfan and his gang of smugglers to raise some money. One day he forces himself on Monique, and Denise arrives unexpectedly; misinterpreting what is happening, she accuses Monique of trying to take her lover away from her. Monique leaves home to live with an aunt, and although Eugène continues to stay with Denise, he loves Monique and wants to marry her. Finally, the smugglers find themselves surrounded by police and decide to let the blame fall on Eugène. Realizing his position, Eugène goes to the police, but Monique is captured by the gang, and he returns to rescue her. By the time the police arrive, Eugène has been killed by the gang.
