Synopsis

Natsuko's third child, Saori, is born during the summer of 1941, just before her father, Tetsuo, is drafted. A short time later, Natsuko discovers the baby girl is blind. Natsuko decides, with Tetsuo's advice, to have surgery performed on Saori, but on the day before the operation the doctor is also drafted. During the evacuation of Tokyo, Natsuko is separated from her two older children but manages to stay in touch with Saori's doctor, who finally arranges for the surgery. It proves unsuccessful and doctors predict Saori will be blind for life. Natsuko and Tetsuo, now discharged from the army, place Saori in a school for the blind. Ten years later, the family son becomes engaged to a waitress who breaks off the marriage plans when she learns she will have a blind sister-in-law. Saori, studying to become a masseuse, is nearly raped by a degenerate attracted by her innocent appearance. She finally finds happiness in a romance with a blind boy.
