Synopsis
Jean-Marc, an easygoing young Parisian student not overly concerned about his future, casually pursues a career in law. His girl friends help him to forget conditions at home, where his widowed mother, attempting to ward off middle age, entertains a stream of young lovers. Jean-Marc's latest conquest is Françoise, a sweetly naive young woman with a taste for the gaudy. When she breaks with her parents, who resent their liaison, Jean-Marc takes care of her, assuming that they will soon work side by side. Unfortunately, he passes his exams, but she fails hers. When she discovers that she is pregnant, he marries her and takes complete responsibility for the three of them. Soon a rift develops between his mother and his wife; to save their marriage, Jean-Marc delays his professional advancement by taking a job as a magistrate in the Ardennes. Though the provincial life is perfect for Françoise, who conquers the local citizenry, she eventually grows impatient for their return to Paris, where her material desires are better satisfied. Jean-Marc perseveres in his career and eventually finds satisfaction in attacking the problem of juvenile delinquency. Having at last found a calling in life, he is forced by Françoise to abandon it when she creates a scandal. Jean-Marc enters the firm of a Parisian lawyer he had met 3 years earlier and soon becomes indispensable, but, unable to endure the constant compromises required of him, he resigns to work on his own. Françoise, anxious for wealth and luxury, accepts a job in a publicity firm and begins to neglect her family. She becomes involved with several men at work, and when Jean-Marc discovers what is going on, he leaves her.
