Synopsis

To escape her harsh-tempered aunt, Anna joins a traveling repertory company where she meets and falls in love with Darnton, the stage "villain," who with Anna's support, conquers a serious drinking problem. When the troop disbands in New York, however, Anna takes up with Rita, a wild city girl. Rita introduces Anna to Marbridge, a theatrical agent who tries unsuccessfully to force himself on her. After a fight with Darnton, Anna joins Rita and her carousing friends in a car ride that ends in a nearly fatal crash. Sobered by her experiences, Anna reconciles with Darnton, but when she receives the starring role in the company's next show, Enwright, the theater manager, sends Darnton to Chicago to curtail any romantic intrigues during the production. Anna grows increasingly depressed by his absence and, concerned with her performance, Enwright finally reinstates Darnton as the show's villain, to Anna's great delight.
