Synopsis

In a Western mining town, George Forrester, a cardsharp and thief, falls into the hands of a vengeful mob that is bent on hanging him for his crimes. Saved by the arrival of A. K. Austen, an Easterner, a grateful Forrester gives his unexpected new friend half of a playing card with the instructions to call on him in time of trouble. Forrester returns to his Eastern home and his unsuspecting daughter, Margaret Marrable, determined to lead an honest life. Austen also returns, and then meets and falls in love with Margaret, but fails to recognize her father as the former gambler. The arrival of his old partners-in-crime sets Forrester back on a corrupt course. Under threat of exposure, he aids the thieves in robbing Austen's rich father of some English bonds. Because of a loud, overheard quarrel between Austen and his father, Austen is accused of the theft and of his father's ensuing accidental death. He eludes the police and stumbles onto the band of robbers who, fearing capture, decide to murder Austen and send Forrester, one of their men, to do the deed. Finding the poker card in the victim's wallet, Forrester allows the young man to escape and sacrifices himself in an explosion.
