Synopsis

Out of spite, Foster Borrum, an embittered old man, adopts little Ivy Marten and takes her to his home, the "house where nobody ever laughs." A wild tale of cruelty to the child, spread by an urchin who plays with her, brings the old man to court, but when the little girl is placed on the witness stand and asked if her guardian is kind to her, she surprises the court - and most of all Borrum - by a glowing story of the games he plays with her and the attentions he lavishes upon her, all of which are the purely imaginative visions of her loyal little heart. Ivy's devotion wins the case for Borrum and transforms him into Ivy's fantasy image of him, making him the crab no longer.
