Synopsis
After John Klendon is murdered on the night of his impending wedding by a veiled woman while he talks on the telephone to his fiancée, Helen Carter, a note John scrawled which reads, "It was I--" leads the police to suspect suicide. When an injured man with amnesia is found lying near Klendon's home, Henry Hallam, Klendon's friend and an amateur detective, investigates. After Helen takes up settlement work to forget, Hallam and the injured man follow her to a tenement where the man recognizes a beautiful Spanish woman and recovers. The woman lures Helen into a room, and after exhibiting her dead baby, reveals that Klendon would not legitimize their child because he wanted to marry Helen. The woman attempts to throw vitriol in Helen's face, but is prevented. When Hallam and the other man, Carlo, enter, the woman swallows the acid and dies. Carlo, the woman's old sweetheart who was knocked down when she left Klendon's house, identifies her as Inez, whose name Klendon was trying to write when he died. Much later, Hallam and Helen marry.
