Synopsis
Lawyer Oliver Rand marries noted author Elizabeth Town, and for several months they are perfectly happy. On a visit to his friend Charles's art studio, however, Oliver meets the dazzling Catherine and soon becomes infatuated with her. Believing that the same standards of behavior should govern both herself and her husband, Elizabeth protests against Oliver's affair, but in response, he angrily declares that as a man, he may do as he pleases. Embittered, Elizabeth feigns an affair with Charles, and when her baby is born, Oliver assumes that Charles is its father. Catherine becomes jealous of Charles's attentions to Elizabeth and shoots him. With his dying breath, Charles assures Oliver that Elizabeth has remained faithful. Before the couple is reconciled, however, Elizabeth is taught the folly of her rebellion through the death of her child.
