Synopsis

Model student Susan Wesley returns home from Miss Minton's School for Girls during summer vacation. Preoccupied with business, her father James, rather than forcing Susan to dine alone, allows the seventeen-year-old to attend the birthday party of her friend, Linda Ames. After ordering his daughter to change her revealing, yet proper, formal dress for the party, the disciplinarian father grounds her for two weeks upon learning that she and the other party guests had dined at a local nightclub without telling him of her plans. Susan celebrates the end of her punishment on July 4th and travels to the beach in her father's car with Linda. They crash into a car driven by would-be plane designer Don Martin, whose friend, Jerry Kearns, a mechanic, repairs the fender damage on Mr. Wesley's automobile. When her father spots his damaged car and demands an explanation, Susan tells her story. Although forbidden to see Don, to whom she is strongly attracted, Susan meets him surreptitiously and learns that he, too, has parent trouble. The antagonism of their parents spurs the youngsters to elope. Their marriage is annulled, however, and Mr. Wesley cuts off all communication between the two. Desperate, Don breaks into the Wesley residence, but is apprehended and sentenced to six months in reform school. Escaping, he seeks out Susan, but they are captured by the police. Linda's mother, a brilliant and understanding attorney, defends Don, attacking the persecution and misunderstanding the young couple have endured. In a bitter denunciation, the judge blames the selfishness and narrow-mindedness of Susan's father and Don's mother for the situation. Don receives a suspended sentence on condition that he and Susan not marry for one year. Susan returns to school with Linda, whose engagement to Jerry has her mother's blessing. Aware of his mistake, Mr. Wesley allows Don to visit his daughter during his probation.
