Synopsis
Young "Nevada" and his sidekick "Weary" Pierce intercept bank robber Les Setter and take the stolen money, intending to keep it for themselves. Setter vows revenge and they release him, but later they give the money to the sheriff. Setter kills David Ward, a man commissioned by the government to buy horses for Fort Apache, and decides to impersonate him and sell the horses for personal profit. Believing he is making a sale to the government, rancher Blaine makes a deal with Setter. After Nevada and Weary meet with their old friend Ben Ide and his girl friend, Ina Blaine, Ina's father hires them as ranch hands to help with the horse roundup. Because Nevada is aware of Setter's real identity, Setter tries to have him killed but does not succeed. Setter then arranges to have his men steal one hundred horses during the roundup and to frame Nevada for the theft. Consequently, Nevada and Weary are arrested. Weary's romantic interest, Millie Moran, the Blaine's cook, bakes a pie with a gun in it, and Weary and Nevada escape from jail in time to prevent Setter and his men from stealing all the horses. After Setter's arrest, the sheriff offers Nevada a position as deputy sheriff.

The title card reads "Zane Grey's Forlorn River." According to copyright records, "Spike" Speckman, Billy Hurley and Frank Cordell were former champion rodeo riders. According to a news item in Hollywood Reporter, this was filmed on location at Kernville, CA. In 1926, Paramount released Forlorn River, a silent based on the same source, directed by John Waters and starring Jack Holt and Raymond Hatton (see AFI Catalog of Feature Films, 1921-30; F2.1924).
