Synopsis

Samurai Iuemon Tamiya steals from the estate of his deceased master rather than accept a menial job. When his father-in-law, Samon Yotsuya, learns of the crime and demands that Iuemon's wife, Oiwa, be granted a divorce, Iuemon slays the old man in order to protect his reputation and his marriage. He helps his companion Gonbei to win the hand of Oiwa's sister by murdering her fiancé and later rescues Oume, the beautiful daughter of a wealthy lord, from a band of robbers. Determined to better himself by marrying Oume, Ieumon poisons his wife and then kills his servant, claiming that the two were secret lovers. The ghosts of the Yotsuya family [of Oiwa, according to some sources] return to haunt him, but Ieumon nevertheless weds Oume. The ghosts appear before Ieumon on his wedding night, and while in a trance he murders his bride and her father. In a desperate attempt to rid himself of the ever-present apparitions, he seeks solace in a Buddhist temple; but he can find no escape from madness and death.
