Synopsis
Stationed at Gibraltar in World War II, Lieut. "Piggy" Wigg has the difficult task of looking after the Rock's famous Barbary apes. Legend has it that as long as the apes are on the Rock, Gibraltar will remain British; consequently, when a mysterious disease threatens the ape colony, Major Hobson, the intelligence officer, realizes that if the apes all die the Germans will take advantage of the legend for propaganda purposes. Hobson is also faced with another crisis: the death of the sole male ape has made the females so listless and morose that it is imperative that another male be found immediately. He therefore orders Wigg and his batman, Evans, to steal one from a German circus in Zurich. After smuggling the animal out of the circus by putting it into a prop horse, they successfully return to Gibraltar and thereby save the ape colony. Despite Wigg's promotion, he and Evans are transferred to the Tower of London to guard its ravens. It is believed that if the birds were to leave, the British Kingdom would fall.
