Synopsis
En route to Würzburg the Countess Franziska's coach is intercepted by a robber band and brought to the Spessart Inn. Learning that she is to be held for ransom, the countess changes clothes with fellow traveler Felix and returns to her father's castle. When the miserly count refuses to ransom the other captives, however, she returns to the Spessart Inn disguised as a man. All but the robber captain fail to recognize her. Having fallen in love with the countess, the chieftain remains silent. Rebelling against him, the band attacks its prisoners, an assault interrupted by the arrival of soldiers, who arrest the brigands. Aided by Franziska, the captain takes refuge in the castle. Following his departure, the countess reluctantly prepares for her marriage to the fop, Baron Sperling. The ceremony is stopped by the bandit chieftain, who reveals himself to be an Italian nobleman, the patron of Franziska's father, and claims the countess as his own.
